service update  march 2004

Here is important and beneficial news about your DTL service.

The Best Anti-Virus Software
Despite the popularity of anti-virus software, Internet users are being infected by computer viruses in record numbers. Yet, everyone already has the world's best anti-virus software. It comes pre-installed -- right between your ears.

Anti-virus software only catches known computer viruses, and only if regularly updated. But virus programmers are releasing new strains to get around the latest filters faster than anti-virus software companies can keep pace. As a result, our dependence on software can give a false sense of security.

Here are some common sense practices from DTL for staying safe online:

  • Stay up to date. Visit Windows Update or Apple Service & Support and Office Update regularly to apply critical security updates. If you use anti-virus software, keep it updated (but don't bet the life of your files on it).
  • Don't open attachments from unknown senders. Delete them.
  • Don't trust known senders. Viruses are often sent by people you know. If you weren't expecting an attachment, or the subject or message seems odd, contact the sender before opening it.
  • Know the executable file extensions. Beware of attachments with .EXE, .COM, .SCR, .BAT, .VBS, and .PIF extensions. A .ZIP file containing a file with one of those is probably a virus. Don't open it.
  • Look for multiple extensions. Attachments with dual extensions (e.g., OPENME.PDF.EXE) try to fake you out. The last extension matters. To see it, Windows users must use the Folder Options control panel to remove the checkmark on "Hide extensions for known file types."
Use Common Sense. Follow these guidelines and your good judgment. It's possible to use the Internet daily without any special software.

Showcase  Ras Graphics
Ras GraphicsThis month, DTL is proud to showcase the official web site for Ras Graphics. Owner and professional graphic artist Scott Rasmussen chose DTL to program and host his interactive web site, complete with a dynamic, easy to update portfolio. DTL uses highly optimized DHTML, style sheets, JavaScript, and PHP programming to bring Ras Graphics' engaging visuals to life. "Morgan, you've outdone yourself again," says Rasmussen. "I was thrilled to see how you replicated my original concept to perfection and added all the functionality that I was looking for in very short order. Brilliant work!" Ras Graphics also uses its web site for exchanging large graphics files with business clients and printing services.
