Inside:

How to Cast a Winning Vote

Whether you elect DTL to design your web site, develop a business application, manage your company's online operations, or all of the above, you can't lose (even if you live in Florida). Here's proof.

Several DTL customers came out winners in October by taking advantage of our half-off promotion. Although we worked twice as hard for half the reward, we made new friends and our existing clients gained new insight into our skills.

  • Datacom Management enlisted DTL to make several web content changes, including adding a whole new page for its associates.
  • Venezia Bella tapped DTL's web marketing expertise to improve search engine placement for its Italian jewelry e-commerce site.
  • San Diego Sports Arena relied on DTL for urgent database support.
  • Word From The Heart had DTL add three new service pages. As a gift, we updated the site to be 100% HTML 4.01-compliant.
  • Brock Meeks took advantage of DTL to create an entirely new and exciting web venture which we'll unveil in a future showcase!
  • Ocean Point Financial's computers are running faster and more secure after PC tune-ups from DTL.
  • Mission Valley Landscape employed DTL to add two new pages to its web site and update several others.
  • ARC Ergonomics is enjoying the comfort of their new DTL-designed site. (Their old web site was a bit painful.)
  • Artizara is transferring their e-commerce site to DTL after their former hosting company was down for a week without recent backups.
  • Visual Antics is transferring their site to DTL for much needed attention. DTL is reducing the graphics company's site from 12MB to 2MB while improving image quality, load time, and overall performance.

These customers (and more) are better off now for voting their confidence in DTL. They improved their online businesses, saved money, got a free plug, and the link on this page helps their search engine rankings. How smart is that?

"It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared." — Whitney Young Jr.

"What's a backup?" ...And Other Silly Answers to Serious Questions

It seemed like an epidemic. In one day, we received calls from web site owners with downed web sites at different hosting providers. DTL asked the obvious question: did you have a recent backup? "No, we are not technical people," replied one. And our all-time favorite response: "What's a backup?" Good heavens!

Even if your web host performs regular backups, like DTL does, nothing beats having a recent copy of your web site in hand. You don't have to be a tech-head, you just have to ask for it. We'll copy your current site, database, log files, and statistics, onto a CD and mail it to you. Then you can rest easier and wiser.

Don't be silly. A CD with your current web site is smart insurance.

Introducing DTL Dialup Service

Further simplify your life with DTL Dialup, the perfect companion service for those who know the modem is not yet dead.

Most customers have a fixed broadband connection at home or the office and keep a dialup account for travel or as a backup. Now you can add unlimited dialup access to your DTL account for just $10 per month. We even have a toll-free access number for convenient use when traveling.

Besides allowing you to eliminate one more telecommunications bill, DTL Dialup is more optimal than what you have now. You are right on our network for direct access to your web and email services for the highest performance via modem. You get lower monthly costs, better customer care, faster access—all on one monthly statement. What's not to like?

Banning Email Addresses on the Web

Flaunting your email address in the open is like running a full-page ad with your phone number, begging telemarketers to call any time. Yet, most web site owners do exactly that. The practice creates a "spam magnet" — a fatal attraction that costs service providers time, money, and resources. Expect it to become an extinct practice, and possibly banned outright. Here's why.

Web sites are routinely scanned by software that collects addresses into massive lists for exploitation by spammers. It's no surprise then that owners of web sites with email addresses receive more spam than others. That puts a greater burden on service providers across the Internet. To make this low-hanging fruit impossible to pluck, web hosts could be tempted to block unprotected web pages altogether. While effective, it is not a solution we would prefer to implement.

Instead, DTL recommends a proactive approach: using contact forms or encrypting email addresses. Both methods are easy, effective, and reduce the chance of getting onto new spam lists. But finding all the email addresses in your site can be difficult. They may not be readily apparent in your browser as they are often buried inside HTML.

We can help by providing you with a list of pages in your site that contain unprotected addresses. We can also encrypt them or create secure contact forms for you. If you need assistance in spam-proofing your site, please let us know.

Showcase   Callident Gets Aggravation-Free Hosting
Callident This month we showcase the web site for Callident, developers of amazingly great cluster software that turns Linux machines into supercomputers. Callident wanted an easy-to-manage site based on the popular Mambo Portal system, but the stock Mambo "skins" didn't fit the company's image. So DTL designed a custom "Callident" theme exclusively for their DTL-hosted site. In addition, it takes advantage of our powerful PHP scripting and MySQL database capabilities. "DTL's superior expertise, service, and pricing powers Callident's technically challenging website," says Callident founder, Glen Otero, Ph.D. "They give us aggravation-free hosting." Doing the mambo with Callident was good for us, too.
