Free Software 1.0

Rev up your mouse for some serious downloading as DTL presents our first-ever review of our favorite free software. We've got something for everyone.

Skype - Internet Telephony
www.skype.com
Skype lets you call anyone else on Skype over a secure Internet connection, anywhere in the world for free. Because it uses the audio capabilities of your computer, sound quality beats the old telephone hands-down (and no long distance charges are a nice bonus). Includes conference calling, built-in text chat, and more. (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux)

Pixie - Web Design Color Tool
www.nattyware.com
Pixie is an easy-to-use color picker and mouse tracker. Simply point to a color anywhere on your screen and it will tell you the hex, RGB, HTML, CMYK and HSV value. Press a hotkey and the color value is copied for pasting into your design programs, style sheets, etc. Incredibly, this indispensable web designer's tool uses only 8K of memory! (Windows)

Ad-Aware Personal Edition - Spyware Utility
www.lavasoft.de
There are a lot of spyware utilities available today (and you should have several as no single program can catch all the baddies lurking in your computer). But Ad-Aware is consistently one of the best. Follow each Ad-Aware cleanup with a Spybot Search & Destroy scan, and your Windows should be virtually spotless. (Windows)

ClamAV - Antivirus
www.clamwin.net
If you have a DTL mailbox, you may not recall the last time your antivirus software warned about an infected message. You can thank the ClamAV system that runs on our mail servers for that. Now you can use ClamAV's industrial strength virus detection on your PC as an alternative to commercial packages. A big plus, ClamAV occupies less memory and, unlike other proprietary antivirus programs, does not hinder the performance and stability of your computer. (Windows and Unix)

Showcase: ipayOne Center

ipayOne Center

It's all about great events, and for DTL, it was an event in itself: the launching of the newly rebranded web site for ipayOne Center (formerly the San Diego Sports Arena). When the Arena hired us last year to help manage its old site, we immediately realized it needed serious help. A creaky hodgepodge of applications haphazardly lashed together, it suffered from a confusing design and made daily maintenance a chore for staff. The site needed a total overhaul.

After just one planning meeting, DTL set out to redesign the new standards-compliant site, with a simplified navigation system and a clean, engaging design that ensures consistency throughout its pages.

At the core, DTL custom-built a smart event and content management system that allows Dana Cappello, Marketing Coordinator, to enter new events once. The site automatically knows when to bring them onto their proper position on the home page and when to pull them off. The entire site is web-managed, so the Arena no longer has to maintain expensive web design software, rely on FTP transfers, or resort to in-house HTML programming. We topped it off with a custom banner ad system and other cool features that allow ipayOne Center to focus on its business and less time toiling over its web site. And that is why DTL stands for Design, Technology, and Logistics — three competencies that instill serious confidence in our clients.

WHAT YOU SAID
